REPORT ON THE ETHNIC RELATIONS COMMISSION VISIT TO REGION TEN – OCTOBER 11- 13, 2007
Meeting with the Regional Executive- 09:00 hrs- October 11, 2007
This meeting began with opening remarks by Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council, Mr. Mortimer Mingo. Who said that there was a number of issues the council has been dealing with have implications for harmony and good relations. He noted that he was heartened at the ERC’s attempt to engage the region and thereafter handed the floor over to the Chairman of the ERC, Bishop Juan Edghill.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman noted that the last time the Commission visited Region Ten, it was working with stakeholders to make sure that the August 2006 Elections was one which was free from fear and intimidation. He noted that while it was the responsibility of the Guyana Elections Commission to make sure that the election was free and fair, it was the ERC’s duty to make sure that ethnic security prevailed.
Ever since then, the Chairman stated, the ERC had prioritized the commissioning of research in five areas, namely:
- Employment Practices with particular reference to Region Four
- The award of economic opportunities
- Public procurement and tendering procedures
- The award of academic scholarship
- Land distribution in Guyana- an assessment of existing practices
The Chairman proceeded to apprise the executives of the research finding, summarily.
